What Is an AI Evaluation Harness?

AI Evaluation Harness Explainer

An AI evaluation harness is software that runs models through a defined collection of tasks and records the results. It standardizes dataset loading, prompt formatting, model interfaces, decoding settings, scoring, aggregation, and reports.

A model adapter translates the harness request into the model’s API or local runtime. Task definitions specify examples, few-shot demonstrations, answer extraction, and metrics so repeated runs use the same procedure.

A harness makes large evaluation suites easier to automate and reproduce. It does not guarantee that the tasks measure real-world usefulness, and small differences in tokenization, prompts, stopping rules, or contamination can change scores.

Teams should version task definitions, record model and decoding settings, preserve logs, test metric implementations, and separate development from held-out evaluation. Benchmark numbers are meaningful only with their configuration and uncertainty.

An AI evaluation harness runs models through standardized tasks, prompts, scoring rules, and reporting so results can be reproduced and compared.

Key terms include evaluation suite, task definition, model adapter, prompt template, decoding setting, metric, reproducibility, contamination and report.

Adapters connect different models to common task and scoring interfaces.

Versioned configurations make repeated evaluations easier to compare.

A perfectly reproducible score can still measure the wrong capability.

Task quality, contamination, configuration, and uncertainty need independent review.
