1985: Bird Scores 60

Photorealistic historical reconstruction of Larry Bird scoring 60 points against Atlanta in 1985

On This Day in Sports: March 12, 1985

On March 12, 1985, Larry Bird scored 60 points as the Boston Celtics defeated the Atlanta Hawks 126–115 in New Orleans. It was the highest single-game total in Celtics history, surpassing the 56 points Kevin McHale had scored only nine days earlier. Bird’s performance combined perimeter shooting, post work and relentless movement, turning a relocated regular-season game into one of the most celebrated scoring exhibitions of the decade.

Bird made 22 of 36 shots from the field and 15 of 16 free throws. He scored 36 points after halftime and 16 in the final quarter as Boston pulled away. Several attempts came with defenders closely attached, including off-balance jumpers and deep shots that seemed to rise higher with each possession. Television cameras caught Atlanta players on the bench reacting in disbelief despite being on the losing side.

The game was played at Lakefront Arena because the Hawks occasionally moved home dates to New Orleans in an effort to expand their regional audience. That unusual setting added to the atmosphere: a neutral crowd gradually embraced Bird’s pursuit, while Boston teammates searched for him whenever he gained even a narrow opening. The Celtics understood that they were watching both a record and a competitive answer to McHale’s recent outburst.

Bird’s 60 remained Boston’s franchise record for nearly four decades before Jayson Tatum matched it in 2021. The total is remembered not simply because it was large, but because it expressed Bird’s entire offensive range and his appetite for pressure. On a night when every difficult shot appeared possible, he transformed an ordinary March game into a piece of NBA folklore.
