1953: Cousy Wins Four-OT Classic

Photorealistic historical reconstruction of Bob Cousy leading Boston in a four-overtime playoff game in 1953

On This Day in Sports: March 21, 1953

On March 21, 1953, Bob Cousy scored 50 points as the Boston Celtics outlasted the Syracuse Nationals 111–105 in four overtimes. Twenty-five of his points came during the extra periods, and the victory eliminated Syracuse from the Eastern Division semifinals. In an era before the shot clock, the game became an exhausting sequence of deliberate possessions, strategic fouls and pressure free throws controlled by Boston’s inventive guard.

Cousy entered the game with an injured leg but became more influential as the hours passed. Coach Red Auerbach kept the ball in his hands because Syracuse repeatedly fouled to stop the clock and prevent Boston from protecting a lead. Cousy made 30 of 32 free throws, setting playoff records for both makes and attempts, while also creating tying baskets or foul shots near the end of multiple overtime periods.

The contest illustrated why the NBA soon needed a shot clock. Teams with a lead could hold the ball for long stretches, while opponents used immediate fouling as one of the few ways to regain possession. Those tactics slowed regulation and turned overtime into a procession to the foul line. Yet within that awkward structure, Cousy’s stamina, ballhandling and nerve produced a performance that felt remarkably modern in its command.

Boston advanced but did not win the championship that year. The larger breakthrough came later, after the shot clock and Bill Russell helped transform the Celtics into a dynasty. Cousy’s four-overtime masterpiece remained part of the foundation. It displayed the creativity that earned him the nickname “Houdini of the Hardwood” and preserved a night when one guard scored half his points after regulation to keep a season alive.
