Business Continuity Planning Explainer

Business continuity planning prepares an organization to keep critical functions operating, or restore them in a controlled order, during disruption. It complements emergency response, crisis communication, cybersecurity incident response, and technology disaster recovery but is not identical to any one of them.

A business impact analysis identifies essential products and services, dependencies, maximum tolerable disruption, required recovery time, data needs, staffing, facilities, utilities, suppliers, and legal obligations. Leaders then prioritize recovery and decide which resources and alternatives are needed.

Strategies can include remote work, alternate sites, manual procedures, backup communications, redundant technology, secondary suppliers, emergency inventory, cross-trained staff, and financial reserves. Plans assign authority, contacts, triggers, checklists, and communication responsibilities so decisions do not begin from zero.

A document is not proof of readiness. Tabletop exercises, technical tests, supplier drills, and after-action reviews expose missing access, outdated contacts, unrealistic timing, and unclear ownership. Update the plan after organizational changes and exercises, and protect copies so they remain available during the disruption.

Use a business impact analysis to rank services, dependencies, recovery times, and resource needs.

Not every activity must return at once.

Plan people, sites, technology, suppliers, communications, records, and manual workarounds.

Strategies should match the disruption and recovery objectives.

Run tabletop and operational tests, record lessons, and revise owners and contacts.

A plan that has never been tested is an assumption.
