On This Day in Sports: February 7, 2016
On February 7, 2016, the Denver Broncos defeated the Carolina Panthers 24–10 in Super Bowl 50 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. Carolina arrived with a 15–1 record and the league’s highest-scoring offense, powered by MVP quarterback Cam Newton. Denver countered with the NFL’s top defense, a unit built on relentless edge pressure, tight coverage and the belief that it could win even if its offense produced only a few explosive plays.
Von Miller established the tone in the first quarter. He beat the protection, stripped Newton in the end zone and allowed Malik Jackson to recover for a touchdown. Carolina pulled within three points before halftime, but Denver continued to collapse the pocket and disrupt the Panthers’ timing. The Broncos did not need a prolific passing day from Peyton Manning; they relied on field position, Brandon McManus’s kicking and a defense that repeatedly ended promising drives.
The score remained 16–10 deep into the fourth quarter, leaving Carolina one touchdown from the lead. Miller then struck again, knocking the ball from Newton’s hands near the goal line. Denver recovered, and C.J. Anderson scored moments later to secure the championship. The Broncos finished with seven sacks and forced four turnovers while holding Carolina to its lowest point total of the season.
Miller earned Super Bowl MVP honors after recording 2½ sacks and two forced fumbles. The victory gave Denver its third championship and provided a fitting final game for Manning, who retired a month later. Super Bowl 50 remains a defining example of defense controlling a modern championship: Denver’s offense gained fewer than 200 yards, yet the pass rush and secondary dictated the contest from the opening quarter to the final possession.
Carolina entered the game 17–1 including the playoffs and led the NFL in regular-season scoring.
Miller’s first strip-sack produced Denver’s only defensive touchdown of the game.
The Broncos recorded seven sacks and forced four turnovers.
Denver’s offense gained fewer than 200 yards but repeatedly benefited from field position.
Miller became the tenth defensive player to win Super Bowl MVP.
The game was the final NFL appearance of Peyton Manning’s Hall of Fame career.
