1971: Ali and Frazier Meet

Photorealistic historical reconstruction of Madison Square Garden before the Ali-Frazier heavyweight fight in 1971

On This Day in Sports: March 8, 1971

On March 8, 1971, Joe Frazier defeated Muhammad Ali by unanimous decision at Madison Square Garden in the bout billed as the Fight of the Century. Both men entered unbeaten and each held a legitimate claim to the heavyweight championship. The matchup therefore carried a rare sporting clarity: two champions in their primes, with contrasting styles and public identities, finally sharing one ring over fifteen demanding rounds.

Ali returned from a forced absence after refusing induction into the U.S. Army, while Frazier had become the division’s recognized champion during that absence. Their differences were magnified by the politics of the Vietnam era and by Ali’s relentless promotion. Inside the ring, Ali used speed and combinations; Frazier pressed forward, absorbed punches and attacked the body, repeatedly bringing his powerful left hook into range.

The contest remained competitive deep into the night. Frazier hurt Ali in the eleventh round and produced the enduring moment in the fifteenth, landing a sweeping left hook that knocked Ali down. Ali rose and finished, but Frazier’s pressure and cleaner damaging blows secured all three judges’ decisions. Both fighters required medical attention afterward, evidence of the extraordinary pace and punishment they had endured.

The victory established Frazier as the undisputed champion and gave Ali his first professional defeat. Their rivalry continued through two more bouts, ending with Ali’s brutal victory in the 1975 Thrilla in Manila. The first meeting stands apart because of the undefeated records, the cultural stakes and the quality of the action. It remains a model for the rare night when anticipation and performance reach the same historic level. Its worldwide reputation has only grown.
