Photorealistic editorial reconstruction of a red-and-gold football team celebrating a championship comeback

On This Day in Sports: February 2, 2020

On February 2, 2020, the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers 31–20 in Super Bowl LIV at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens. Kansas City was seeking its first championship since the 1969 season, while San Francisco hoped to match the league record with a sixth Super Bowl victory. The game remained tied at 10 through halftime, but the 49ers controlled the third quarter behind a balanced offense and a defense that repeatedly pressured quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

San Francisco scored ten unanswered points after intermission and led 20–10 with less than seven minutes remaining. Mahomes had already thrown two interceptions, and the Chiefs had converted only one third down in the second half. Facing third-and-15, he escaped pressure and found Tyreek Hill deep for 44 yards. That completion transformed the game. Mahomes soon hit Travis Kelce for a touchdown, cutting the margin to three and restoring Kansas City’s aggressive rhythm.

After the Chiefs forced a punt, Mahomes connected with Sammy Watkins for 38 yards and then found Damien Williams near the goal line. Williams stretched the ball across for the touchdown that put Kansas City ahead 24–20. San Francisco had one more chance, but Jimmy Garoppolo’s fourth-down pass fell incomplete. Williams added a 38-yard touchdown run to finish the scoring, completing a burst of 21 unanswered points in the final minutes.

Mahomes finished with 286 passing yards, two touchdown passes and two interceptions, becoming the youngest quarterback at the time to win both a league MVP award and a Super Bowl MVP. The victory ended a 50-year championship wait for Kansas City and gave coach Andy Reid his first title as a head coach. It also established a defining trait of the modern Chiefs: no deficit felt secure against an offense capable of changing a game in a handful of plays. Their fourth-quarter response turned a frustrating night into the beginning of a championship era.

Kansas City had not won the Super Bowl since defeating Minnesota after the 1969 season.

San Francisco led 20–10 in the fourth quarter after intercepting Mahomes twice.

A 44-yard completion on third-and-15 opened the drive that began Kansas City’s comeback.
